THE GIRL OUTSIDEI was planning on blogging today as it was, but until this moment hadn't quite decided on what the subject of my post would be. However, after just reading the news regarding Dean Windass and his speaking out over his depression and recent suicide attempts, I felt like that would be a good place to start. There has been a lot of attention paid lately to the growing number of professional athletes suffering with depression. I don't know if any of you caught the documentary 'Freddie Flintoff: The Hidden Side of Sport'? It was aired for the first time on BBC1 last Wednesday and gave a real insight into how some of our most successful athletes face the daily battle of dealing with depression. Move The Girl Outside lyrics & video : You couldn't make it easy if you tried So I'm gonna save it for the girl outside I'll take her on a magic carpet ride We could walk the c. Move - The Girl Outside Lyrics. Move Flowers In The Rain The Girl Outside *You couldn't make it easy if you tried So I'm gonna save it for the girl outside I'll take her. It got me thinking too; I know that a number of people think that by focussing solely upon the illness and how it effects people in sport, that it may be taking away attention from how it effects society as a whole, though I must say, I take quite a different view. First of all, I think that any positive coverage the issue is given can do nothing but help work towards ending the stigma. More importantly though, I for one find it relatively easy to draw direct comparison from the lives of these sports men and women to those of us mere mortals. That is for those of us with two brain cells to rub together, it isn't hard to take the experiences gained by those in sport and compare them to experiences that take place within many of our lives. Take for instance, the fact that 'retirement' from sport is often something players find hard to deal with, to get used to after a) always having previously had something to get up for in the morning and b) having something that made them feel important/adored/successful/special.. It doesn't take a genius to realise that there are thousands of other people out there who have had to face instances where they no longer feel important or useful to others or indeed to themselves. In today's current economic climate, a huge number of people are facing the prospect of redundancy/unemployment and those that have already been victim to the chop have a lot more to deal with than simply the financial implications. The feeling of having no real purpose, of not being able to provide effectively for yourself or for your family can often lead to a bout of depression. It is one of those clich. For people who have reached retirement age, for women that have decided to give up work in favour of becoming a full time mother and who then regret the decision.. Work, relationships, friendships.. What I would like to say though, is that no matter how much things 'change' in life - these changes are what shape us and make us into the people we are. Only we ourselves know how much we are capable of achieving. It is easy to say to someone . I've been driving myself mad for months wanting to get things done quickly to make everything a lot easier for myself. The course I'm studying is in Liverpool and eventually that is the place that I would like to settle and. The problem is, I know myself that it is never that simple. It isn't just a case of feeling 'useless' after going through a tough time & change of circumstances, it is very often a case of having to build up any sense of confidence you once had again from scratch. You CAN do this though - yet again it is of vital importance to talk to your doctor, your friends and your family and tell them how you are feeling; then in turn their support will help to guide you through. Just because you lost the sense of happiness/achievement/enjoyment, one thing brought to your life - it doesn't mean that you won't eventually find something else that in time will become just as fulfilling. I know that whilst suffering with depression, the main objective and the only thing a person should really be concentrating on is getting themselves better. However, sometimes the thought of a 'better' future can help. For friends of those suffering, encourage them; show them you have faith in their ability to turn things around because that is exactly what they need at this moment in time. Make sure they know that they're not 'washed up', they SHOULD continue to dream. THE MOVE lyrics - The Girl Outside. You couldn't make it easy if you tried. So I'm gonna save it for the girl outside. I'll take her on a magic carpet ride. We could walk the clouds together. Stay in love forever. If you don't answer what I feel inside. I might try to make it with the girl outside. And all our thoughts together we'll confide. We'll see fairytale cities. When following the lands of love. Who needs the girl outside. When I can ride the time and life with you. Why don't you turn around. And look at me, I often wish I knew you. You overstepped the mark so run and hide'Cause I'm gonna take it to the girl outside. I won't cast all my little dreams aside. Every flowers hide their faces.
